Earlier this summer a friend and I were prowling various stores for the heck of it, so we went to a little consignment shop in a part of town I haven't been to much. They seemed to specialize in older clothing. There we found a rack with a small selection of summer kimonos, which I, of course, proceeded to try on. There was one that I really liked: nice shade of blue, interesting pattern, was still in decent condition. So I got it.

Here's the problem --I have no obi (belt) to go with it. And I don't really have anywhere to wear it either. (Although the same friend who was with me when I got it once told me, "Sometimes you have to MAKE a place to wear an outfit to.") So the bigger problem, then, is that I can't wear the kimono without an obi; it just won't stay closed. So, on another shopping trip we took the GPS and searched for fabric stores, so I could make my own obi. We found fabric stores, but...

I am amazed by how many tacky patterns I saw on cloth. Hello Kitty (R), football, basketball, leaves, pumpkins, christmas trees, you name the tacky pattern and it was there. We even looked in el Wal Marto, which does indeed have cloth, because it has freaking EVERYTHING. They had some of the tackiest cloth of all. I saw sequins, I saw courderoy, I saw shiney and stretchy and tacky bathing suit material. The only thing I didn't see was somethign I'd actually want to make into an obi that I'd wear in public.

Alas, if only my karate obi matched...

In other news....

This past weekend two of my friends from karate class got married to each other. Everyone else was taking pictures, so I figured I'd mooch images from them later. I'm not so good with a camera. It was a nice ceremony and reception, despite the rain that had been threatening all day. It managed to hold off throughout the outdoor ceremony and the reception following was inside.

Now for the fashion review (this IS a post about clothes after all)

I was pleasantly surprised by the fashion choices people made in their attire for the wedding. I consider weddings to be one of the few places that a common person go and they can really dress up nicely. As a college student it was pleasant to have an opportunity to dress up and look my best, in contrast to the baggy pants and t-shirts I wear during most of the school year. However, at my cousin's wedding earlier this summer, I saw more people than I wanted in jeans or pants suits. And some of the dresses were....less than tasteful. Now, at the wedding this past weekend, I saw what I expected to see at a get-together of this type: men dressed nicely in suits, women mostly in dresses, everyone making an effort to look there best because it's a formal celebration. I did see one man in jeans, but he was also watching two small children, so i figured he had other issues to deal with, and it's not like he was wearing Levi's and cowboy boots.

It was really nice to see people from karate classed dressed up. Considering I see them most often in white karate gi, they clean up quite well. The D. bros looked quite dashing in suits, as did Mr. S, who was ushering. The whole San clan looked great, and Twinkletoes got a picture of all of the family before they left. May be the last time we see 'lil J looking so good.

Of course the bride was stunning and the groom was dashing, but Mr Picklez can write a much better post about the whole shebang than I can, since he had backstage passes as a groomsman.

Oh, and I had lots of fun dancing.

More randomness later. And 2.5 weeks to Japan! it's a countdown!!

TSUZUKU

Just so you know, QP stands for "Quick Post". Here's an interesting quote I found. I'll tell you to what it refers later, but see if you can guess:

"We didn't expect anything like what you have witnessed to occur," said WTF secretary general Yang Jin-suk. "I am at a loss for words."

Alright. Give up? It refers to that Cuban and his coach who got a lifetime ban from the Olympics in Taekwondo. The quote by itself is hilarious. The whole "WTF" part threw me off.

I'm going to be slammed with work for the next week or two, so I won't be able to really post. I've decided to give you some Post Previews to keep you interested and checking back and also to help me remember everything.

These Post Previews are suitable for all audiences.

#239 - Martial Arts Nuptials (Romantic Comedy)

Tagline: Love is a sparring match

[Picklez narration]"Some people say love strikes like a lightning bolt, but I say it hits more like a good shin kick. One second you're fighting your fight and into your groove, and then out of nowhere you feel a blunt object colliding into your leg. You have a mini panic attack as you clutch your leg and fall to the ground unable to move, but you're thinking to yourself, 'This is it. This is the moment for which I've been preparing.' The question is this: Do you get back up and into the fray or do you lie on the ground and let victory pass over you?"

[Trailer narration] Hangtime and Overboard joined Picklez karate class for action, excitement, and a chance to gain self-discipline and self-confidence. They knew they would have to learn how to fall in class, but they didn't know that they'd fall in love.

Rated PG-13

#240 - No Exit Strategy (Reality Drama)

Tagline: Joe, if you throw up in the car, I'm going to have to kick your ass.

Description: Stranded in the rain after the last shuttle has departed, Picklez must help Joe get back to the hotel with the help of Babysteps and another drunken groomsman.

Rated TV-M for language, alchohol use, suggestive body posturing

#241 - My First MP-3 Player (Technical Information and Opinion Piece)

#242 - Tropic Thunder Review (Entertainment)

Picklez reviews the movie "Tropic Thunder" starring Ben Stiller, Robert Downey, Jr., and Jack Black.

Rated TV-PG Language

According to the urban dictionary, an ear worm is a song that gets stuck in your head and you can't get it out. I heard Chris Isaak's "Somebody's Crying" on the way to work yesterday and the song is still stuck in my head.

Much to Picklez's delight, the Onion has posted the following article "Darling, There's Something I've Been Hiding From You—I'm Jimmy Buffett" poking fun at Buffett and to some degree his fans.

Yes, it's another parody from the Onion, but I have to admit it is kind of funny and the person that wrote it has a lot of knowledge of Jimmy and his music.

Definitely worth a look...

From the Onion (http://www.theonion.com/content/opinion/darling_theres_something_ive):

Darling, There's Something I've Been Hiding From You—I'm Jimmy Buffett

By Jimmy Buffett
August 20, 2008 | Issue 44•34

Darling, I know we've been together for over 30 years, and we've always promised that we would never keep any secrets from each other. But I think you should brace yourself, because, well, there is one thing I haven't been completely honest about: I'm Jimmy Buffett.

Please don't be mad!

I know that for all these years you thought I was "Jimmy Buffett the boat salesman who had to travel a lot for work." But no. I am Jimmy Buffett the multiplatinum recording artist known for such songs as "Margaritaville" and "Son Of A Son Of A Sailor." It's not something I'm very proud of, but it pays the bills.

I understand it's a lot to take in right now, but it's true. Your husband and the father of your children wrote and recorded the song "Cheeseburger In Paradise." I actually wrote the lyrics to it the night we met. I understand if you never want to speak to me again.

It's been tearing me up inside, lying to you like this. I can't stand all the sneaking around, so as much as it pains me, I must reveal the awful truth. Last night when I told you I was going to run to the store for a second, I actually flew down to Miami and performed in front of 45,000 people for my Year of Still Here Tour. Also, that Country Music Award on my dresser? That wasn't a gag gift like I said. That is real. And I didn't save up for your diamond engagement ring by taking extra shifts at the marina. Something called "Pencil Thin Mustache" bought that ring. It's a song about a guy who wants a pencil thin mustache.

Jesus Christ, what have I done?

And all those times I told you that I was "going to the Jimmy Buffett concert"? Well, I wasn't attending those concerts, I was standing on stage singing songs for thousands of screaming fans. Yes, the very same people who come up to me on the street and tell me how much they love me. They're called…they're called Parrotheads and I'm sorry!

Please, don't let this change the way you think of me. I'm still the same guy I've always been, except that I don't actually sell boats, and occasionally I yell to thousands of people to "get your fins up" and then they wave their hands around above their heads and pretend they're sharks.

If it's any consolation, I'm also a bestselling author. That's not so bad, right? My newest novel is called Swine Not? and on the cover there's a picture of me in a hammock next to a pig, and…. Oh God, you know what, just forget I ever mentioned that.

I didn't want you to ever have to find out about this, but I knew you were starting to get suspicious. Especially the other night, when we were watching TV and the A&E Biography on Jimmy Buffett came on, and he looked exactly like me, and then they showed a picture of the two of us together while they were talking about his family life. I tried to throw you off the trail by accusing you of having an affair with Jimmy Buffett the singer, but deep down, I knew it was time to come clean.

"A Pirate Looks At Forty," "Why Don't We Get Drunk (And Screw)," "Jamaica Mistaica"—all me. Every single one of them. That was me.

I'm sure this probably explains a lot, like how we're able to eat for free twice a day, every day at the Margaritaville Café. Also, the reason I don't let you into the garage and scream at you if you even go near the door is because it's not really a garage, it's a $4 million recording studio. And it's tropical- themed.

You know our friend Greg Taylor who I always call "Fingers" and who is always carrying around a harmonica? Well, he's Fingers Taylor, the guy who plays the harmonica in my backup band, the…ugh, the Coral Reefers. I know, it sounds stupid! It all sounds so stupid, but it's my life!

I still don't know how you didn't figure out my horrible secret last year when we were at that Alan Jackson concert together and he pulled me up on stage. Remember? See, I wasn't doing Jimmy Buffett cover songs for karaoke, I was actually being Jimmy Buffett because I am him, and I was performing songs that I wrote, sometimes right when you were in the next room with the kids.

Oh my God, the kids! They must never find out.

*************

LOLOLOLOLOLOL1010101!!!!! TAKE THAT YOU FRAKKING PHEADS!!!!

END OF THE MOST HILARIOUS LINE EVAR!

I wanted to post some pics from our recent trip to Stone Mountain with a couple of shots from our Georgia Aquarium visit on the same weekend. On this trip, we learned that Art LOVES ICEE and very hot temperatures plus action packed hours at Stone Mountain produces two very tired boys at the end of the day.

Not much else to say... check out the pictures.

City Beach that is. I had a really good time this weekend. It was a lot of work, but I still had fun.

Friday

The whole world against me

I went to go pick up my car from the body shop after my accident. [#228] The grand total was $2360. That's including the $500 deductable. So the insurance company sent a check for $1860. That really seemed like a lot of money for a new bumper, but what do I know?

Anyway, the Boss took me to pick up the car. The shop is really about 10 minutes away, but it took us 20 minutes to get there because of road construction. I then spent at least 15 minutes in the parking lot trying to get my rear view camera and other GPS functions to work correctly. The things stopped working because the mechanics had to unhook the battery and all the settings got erased. Luckily, all my GPS address data was there.

As I was nearing the freeway, I got a call from the Boss informing me that I had left my gi in her truck. I cussed loudly for about 10 minutes and told her I would back track and meet her at a grocery store. I bought her a six pack of Mike's Hard lemonade and a candy bar to thank her for bringing my uniform and to make up for her having to hear me shout expletives at myself over the phone. I then took her for lunch. My original plan was to pick up the car at 09:00 and be in PCB by 15:00 so I might get a chance to enjoy the beach for an hour or so. It was now 11:30 so I figured I would just leave at 12:00 and try to get to PCB in time to help set up the gym for the tournament.

Setting up

I got to the gym at about 17:30. Mr. C was already there and nearly everything had been unloaded from the trailer. Mr. C, Mr. Toy, and I surveyed the gym to figure out how many rings we would need. After that was done, I was given the task of lining the rings. Just for the record, I don't like that job. There's a lot of ciphering involved and if it isn't done right, you end up wasting a lot of time and resources. I don't mind putting the tape down, but I do mind all the measuring. The worst part is having to calculate the center lines for sparring.

I've also learned that putting the lines on a traditional wooden basketball floor is much harder than the concrete rec center type floor. On wooden floors you can only use the floor to help guide you in one direction. With the concrete floors, there are usually tile lines running in two directions. Sometimes you even luck out and the tiles come out to a usable measuring device (i.e. one tile = 6").

We finally got it done and I was then informed that I would have to MC the event the next day. That's no problem, but again that is a job that is a lot more difficult than it sounds. I'll talk about that later, though. We then had a discussion about where we were going to eat that night. I told Mr. C that I was going to Capt. Anderson's no matter what. They liked the idea and I met them there.

GPS Issues

I was staying off site at a different hotel because it was cheaper. I had the exact street address, but the GPS took me to the wrong place. I came to learn later that the destination marker works within a radius. That means that it can take you to a specific point but you may not get to the address because it is on the other side of a fence or something.

Operation: Sautee'd Crabfinger

I checked into the hotel and headed to the restaurant. I was the first one there so I made a request for a table for 10. Everyone arrived shortly after and we headed to the dining room. I got my normal crabfinger appetizer (every other restaurant in PCB calls them crab "claws") and a yellow fin tuna steak (rare) with a baked potato. It was delicious. At dessert time, Mr. C wanted a dessert but not a whole one. Mrs. C was going to share with Ms. C (their daughter). Mr. Toy was going to share with his wife.

Mr. C asked me to choose between a "pecan nut flour cake" or a peanut butter pie. I'm not really a big peanut butter fan, so I went with the cake which sounded pretty good. They brought our dessert and Mrs. C and I traded seats. Mr. C then requested another plate because he didn't mind sitting next to me, but he damn sure wasn't going to share a dessert plate with me. "It just wouldn't look right!" he said. I agreed with his declaration.

I watched as he took the first bite of the cake and didn't see any negative reaction, so I tore into mine. Unbeknownst to me, he was watching me eat my cake. It didn't really taste like anything. I was expecting a nutty pecan flavor or something. The cake was the consistency of gingerbread but without the spicy flavor. It was just plain bland.

We finished the dessert very quickly and when we were done, Mr. C asked, "What did you think?"

"I didn't really taste anything, sir," I replied.

"I know. It was like eating a piece of wheat bread." At this point everyone laughed.

"Yes, sir. It was wheat bread with cool whip on it," I added. More laughter.

"I was watching you eat your cake, and you just kind of chewed it without making a face."

"I was waiting for some kind of taste to kick in," I responded.

"Yeah, me too."

As we left the restaurant, Mr. C offered to let me stay at their trailer Saturday night rather than pay for another night at the hotel. I accepted.

Channel Surfing

I got back to the hotel and I was flipping around and I saw someone I knew on E! It turned out that the show was about the creator of the Girls Gone Wild videos and there was footage of Mr. P, one of the PCB instructors, giving the mayor of PCB the papers to arrest the Girls Gone Wild dude. It is a small world in which we live. I talked about it later with Mr. P and he told me that he is also in a 1992 episode of "Unsolved Mysteries". He was an officer with the PCBPD at that time investigating a kidnapping that happened. They featured the case on the show.

Saturday

Flooded

I was supposed to report to the gym at 8:45 but I ended up being late because when I came downstairs to get into my vehicle, I found that it was partially submerged in about 10" in water. It had rained really hard the night before and the particular parking spot I chose was apparently the low point of the entire complex.

I went back upstairs and changed out of my uniform went back down and waded out to my car. I then had problems backing out of the space because my tires were sitting on wet sand and dirt and I couldn't get any traction. It must have taken me 15 minutes to get out of the parking space. I then went back upstairs and changed back into my gi. I went around to the front office and checked out of my hotel room before heading to the tournament.

MC

Being a tournament MC is a lot of hard work and I don't think Mr. Tur gets the credit he deserves for making that happen. He usually MCs all the tournaments and I am the back up. He wasn't there so I had to run the whole show. The hardest part is the Musical kata division. You have to keep track of what competitor goes with what music and which track and you have to watch for the signal to turn it on and turn it off. It's really a pain in the ass.

The second hardest part is pronouncing names correctly. I think I'm pretty good at that, but sometimes you get result sheets with very poor handwriting, and it's hard to make out the name. I was also having a feedback issue with the microphone.

Another thing that makes things difficult is that you almost always have 3 or 4 people trying to talk to you at one time. Competitors come up to ask when divisions are called, tournament coordinators are telling you what divisions to call and where, event staff are telling you that they have t-shirts or pizza in the lobby, and score sheets are being handed to you to announce the winners of the various divisions. This tournament had Grand Championships so I also had to keep track of the winners of the various black belt kata divisions so that they could be called back later for the Grand Championship.

1st place

On a whim, I decided to compete in the open-hand kata division. Big Red and Latino Heat weren't there so I felt my chances were pretty good for a 3rd or 4th place finish. I surprised when the called my name for 1st place. Of course, winning that division meant that I had to compete for Grand Champion. I didn't win that but I got through my kata without screwing up. Mr. McN told me afterwards that he could tell I had been working on that kata and that it was the best kata he'd seen from me in a while. It's really nice to know that all the practicing I do pays off once in a while.

Incident in Ring #1

I cornered judged in Ring 1 with Mr. LeC for the Men's White/Yellow belt division. There were some real jack asses in the division. By that I mean it was the jackass style that Hangtime had to fight at Dothan last year. These dudes take point sparring WAY to seriously. Right off the bat these dudes were swinging for the fence and Mr. LeC felt it was severe enough to give a warning and then tell the fighter that if he did it again he would disqualify him. Essentially, he was skipping the penalty point rule. As a center judge, that is his perogative, but I think in this particular instance he should have stayed with the standard rules.

There were about 20 of the jackass people hanging around the ring and the mood was getting hostile towards the judges. Mr. C's spidey sense must have been tingling because he came over and watched the ring. When the jackass fighter clocked his opponent again, Mr. LeC called a conference and said he was going to disqualify him. The jackasses around the ring started yelling and in a flash, I saw Mr. C get in the face of the head jackass. The fat jackass that Hangtime fought stepped into the ring to start protesting and Mr. LeC chased him out. I was torn on what to do. I really wanted to get behind Mr. C but I needed to stay in my corner to keep the jackasses on my side of the ring from closing in on us.

I think we were all a hair's breadth away from fighting for real. I don't think it would have went well for the jackasses. The only reason I say that is because I can tell they only point-fight and playing touchy-tap (even with excessive contact) won't help you in a street fight. All it takes is a solid leg kick or some grabbing to make you completely useless.

Incident in Ring #3

Ms. P and Ms. H (from Dothan) were point-sparring and they were getting way out of control. They were hitting each other after the stop was called and they were both swinging for the fence. I took them each aside and gave them a stern talking to and reminded them that if Mr. C had seen what they were doing, he would have gone ballistic. They made up and hugged and became friends again.

Crab claws again!

After a lot of back and forth we decided to eat at a place called Billy's Oyster Bar. They served steamed crab claws so I got the shrimp and crabclaws combo. It was pretty good. I don't think the claws were as good as Capt. Anderson's but I guess it's a matter of opinion.

War revealed

While at dinner, everyone was discussing all the other options that were open to us. Everyone was glad to have been at Billy's because it worked out incredibly well. Someone uttered the word, "Margaritaville". I then announced to everyone that if that had been the chosen restaurant, I would have sat in the car and eaten Dairy Queen.

Of course that prompted questions of "Why?" so I explained to them my dislike of Buffett. I told them all, "He doesn't live what he sells. He sells a lifestyle that he doesn't live himself and that doesn't sit well with me." Everyone shook their heads in approval. Mr. P's girlfriend then said, "I think you need to relax a little bit." We all got a good laugh out of that.

Incident at the gas station

After dinner, Mr. C wanted to get a diet Coke so we stopped at a convenient store on the way back to their PC house. Mr. C sent Ms. C in to fetch the drink for him. As she got out of the car and headed into the store a dude said something to Ms. C. Mr. C asked, "Did that guy just say something to Ms. C?" The next thing I know, he was out of the car and the guy pulled out of the parking lot mumbling something.

It turned out that the guy had said something to Ms. C, who looks to be about 16 even though she doesn't turn 13 until this Saturday. Ms. C said that she didn't understand what the guy said which is probably true because I was close enough to hear but didn't understand him myself. Mr. C got back in the car and he was rightfully upset. "Why in the world would someone want to yell something at a 12 year old girl?"

Mrs. C tried to calm him down, "He doesn't know how old she is. He's just some idiot who's used to hollering at women."

"Well, that don't make it right."

"But that doesn't mean you need to get out of the car. What if that guy had a gun?"

"I don't care."

"Don't worry, ma'am," I interjected. "The guy would have had to shoot me first which would would have given Mr. C more than enough time to destroy that dude."

"You're a good boy!" Mrs. C said laughing.

First Date

During dinner, Ms. C expressed her desire to ride go-carts. Mr. and Mrs. C were both tired and told her that as soon as dinner was over they were going back to the house to go to sleep. I volunteered to take Ms. C to the go-kart track. Mr. C said, "Good that's settled. I trust him to take you. I'm going to bed."

As we left the house Mrs. C was joking around saying that it was Ms. C's first date. "I wish I had a camera so I could take a picture of Ms. C going on her first date...and with a married man, no less! Don't stay out too late! Have fun!" Needless to say, that made me feel very uncomfortable. I was half-way expecting Chris Hansen and the PCB police to jump out of the bushes.

All joking aside, I'm betting that this was the first time Ms. C was ever taken somewhere by an unrelated male unsupervised by her parents. I'm pretty sure that Mr. and Mrs. C consider me a close friend of the family if not a member of their extended family which is why they let me take her to ride go-carts in the first place. I was happy to do it out of a sense of duty and also because I haven't driven a go-cart in a long time. It was also very convenient for her parents because they were tired and wanted to go to bed.

They placed a lot of trust in me that evening and I was honored to be trusted by them.

Back breaker

It turned out that Ms. C was given free tickets to the go-carts because she had gotten injured on them during Spring Break. She was parked in the garage area when another driver rear-ended her. She ended up with bruises on her shins and a huge knot on her back.

Two of Mr. Toy's students joined us for go-cart riding and miniature golf. The track was a wooden and it was a spine buster. To steer the cart I had to lock both my arms out and my knees were nearly straight whenever I tried to depress the brake or gas.

Miniature Golf Champion

I'm actually a co-champ with one of Mr. Toy's students. If I hadn't 3 putted on the last hole, I would have won. I made 3 holes in one. The Hole 13 hole-in-one was the best. I did it one handed.

Sunday

Afterthought

As we were cleaning up the house preparing to leave, Mr. C asked his daughter if she had a good time the previous evening and thanked me for taking her out for them. He then told Ms. C that she should have asked Mr. Toy's daughter to go with us on our outing the previous night before. I said that it would have been too much pressure for me. He asked me why and I told him, "To have to watch the daughters of both of the Co-directors of our organization is a bit much for just one man." Mr. C laughed and said, "I never thought of it that way."

Breakfast

We had a really good breakfast at the PC Cafe. They originally wanted to go to this place called "Flour Power" but they were closed on Sundays. I had a western omelete with hashbrowns and an english muffin. I also ate 1/4 of Mrs. C's blueberry pancakes. It was tasty.

Long Drive Home

I said my goodbyes in the parking lot of the restaurant and headed to the nearest gas station. I filled up my gas tank and inflated my tires and drove all the way back without stopping. I called Babysteps and arranged dinner plans. I also called Mr. Tor to give him a briefing regarding the tournament. I reflected on the tournament and chalked it up to as a really good experience.

Yard work and Dinner

I pulled into Babysteps' driveway just in time to help him finish up some yard work. We then had dinner at "On the Border." To be honest, the only thing going for that place is their fresh flour tortillas. I find their food to be overly complicated. They want to be a high end mexican restaurant so they charge steakhouse prices for their entree's. The problem is that at the end of the night you're paying $9.95 for a plate of 3 chicken soft tacos. What you end up getting is normal mexican food with slightly better ingredients and fancy sauces. I don't really like their sauces that much so I feel I'm getting shafted. If those damn tortillas weren't so good, I would take them off my list.

END OF LINE
